Sarah Bell's Beach Day! is a giclée print of a soft abstract watercolour. It measures 520 mm × 220 mm, and its colours are taken from St Ives sand and the clear water there. When you choose a beach scene, the style, size, print method and hanging position decide whether it still looks right years later. That is why we sell paper prints and framed originals rather than factory canvas sets.
Beach canvas wall art styles
Beach canvas wall art on the big online retailers runs to many pages, and most of it is interchangeable. In practice, three things tell one beach print from another: its mood, its subject and its place. Is the scene calm or stormy? Is there a figure in it, or only the view? Could you name the beach?

Seaside canvas art moods
Coastal images tend to go one of two ways. Some are warm and soft, with gentle waves. Others are hard and stony, with water crashing under dark skies. Any beach scene on a wall canvas takes one of these moods, and that mood matters more to the room than the size of the piece.
Palette follows the same split. Bright tropical beach colours, warm sunset oranges with greys, and black-and-white photography each suit a different room. A seaside scene with sandcastles, buckets and spades feels relaxed and reminds people of childhood. Shipwrecks and smugglers bring drama instead. I would go for the relaxed register in a room where you want to rest, and keep the dramatic one for a hallway.
Swimmers and Cornish places
The Beach Day! St Ives inspired print is a beach landscape without figures. Its interest comes from colour and light.
The swimmer series works in a different way. Our vintage-style and Art Deco swimmers, including the Lido Glamour series, give the wall a figure to look at. That changes how scale reads compared with an empty seascape.
Location prints of Jubilee Pool, St Michael's Mount and Mousehole make a recognisable place part of the picture. These tend to suit people who know that stretch of coast. The abstract abstract beach scene watercolour print suits people who want the feeling of a beach rather than one particular beach.
Sunset wall art prints
Sunset Chasing is Sarah Bell's abstract watercolour of a sunset on a North Coast beach, reproduced as a giclée. We treat it as a companion to Beach Day! The two pieces share the same format and technique, but show a different hour of the day.
The warm, abstract treatment is meant to catch how calm and beautiful the ocean is at dusk. Sunset Chasing, the soft abstract seascape, is the one I would hang where evening light falls, because its warm tones suit that hour.
Cornish sea life gives you a third subject. The Penzance Promenade Flags series shows mackerel, lobster, octopus, grey seal and common dolphin, all species from the waters off Penzance. These are sea illustrations rather than beach scenes. They sit well next to a beach print on the same wall.
Home decor formats and sizes
Format decides how a piece arrives, how it hangs and what it costs to finish. A canvas print, a framed paper print and an unframed sheet are three different objects. Before you compare prices for home decor, check which of the three a listing is actually selling.

Canvas print alternatives
A stretched canvas print is a separate product category from a paper print. It has a soft matte surface, needs no glass and usually arrives ready to hang. You can hang canvas wall art bare, as a gallery-style panel, or put it in a matching frame for a more traditional look.
Our coastal range is built on giclée prints and framed originals, not factory-made canvas sets. A large beach canvas from a marketplace is often a partner product made to fill space. When a canvas print really suits a room, Sunset Chasing is available as a canvas on request.
Paper sizes and framed canvas choices
Paper prints follow the ISO 216 A-series sizes. Both pieces use the 520 mm × 220 mm format mentioned above. That is a wide horizontal format, well suited to the space above a sofa or a headboard. No standard A size gives you that shape.
A frame always ends up larger than the paper, because the mount and moulding add to every edge. Measure your wall against the framed size, not the sheet. This applies just as much when you are comparing a framed canvas.
| Format | Paper size | Framed size (one standard range) |
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | — |
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | 455 × 331 mm |
| A2 | 420 × 594 mm | 626 × 456 mm |

Ordering ready-hanging art
Beach Day! comes rolled in a tube for you to frame at home, or mounted and framed and ready to hang. Sunset Chasing is offered the same two ways. We pack and ship it ourselves from Cornwall. I would choose the rolled version if you want to pick the frame colour to match the room.
The Artist's House Gallery ships worldwide with prices in GBP, and offers no-quibble returns. The delivery charge depends on the format you choose, so check it at checkout.
Recognising quality in coastal prints
Two beach prints can look the same on a screen and age very differently on a wall. The best beach canvas or paper print is the one whose method, paper and edition you can check. You should not have to take the seller's adjectives on trust.
Giclée methods and editions
Giclée is a precisely calibrated inkjet process that uses pigment inks on professional art papers. The word tells you how the print was made, not how long it will last. The Artist's House Gallery prints Beach Day! locally in Penzance on 230 gsm fine-art paper. Each giclée is produced for colour accuracy and detail.
- Method: giclée, screen print or both. Look for the process named on the listing.
- Edition: a limited edition states the most prints that will ever be made of that image, at that size and by that method.
- Numbering: 2/20 means the second print in an edition of 20.
If a listing never says "limited", do not assume either way. Ask before you buy.
Paper, ink and archival claims
GSM means grams per square metre. It measures how heavy the paper is, not how long it lasts. Fibre, acidity, coatings, inks, storage and light matter more. Hahnemühle German Etching, for example, is 310 gsm, 100% alpha-cellulose, acid- and lignin-free and ISO 9706 conform. When a seller writes "archival" on any wall art prints, ask four things: which pigment inks, which acid-free paper, whether there is a documented lightfastness test, and how large the edition is.
Originals versus reproductions
An original artist's print is made by hand, by the artist or under their direct supervision. A giclée is an inkjet reproduction of an image. Both are honest objects, but they are not the same thing, and the price should show the difference.
In screen printing, ink is pushed through a mesh stencil one colour at a time. Each colour sits in its own layer, so hand-pulled prints from the same edition can differ slightly. That variation shows a person made the print. It is not a flaw.
A hand-pulled screen print may be signed, numbered and issued as a limited edition on archival paper. A smaller edition is scarcer. Scarcity does not guarantee artistic quality or future value, so buy the image you want to live with.
Hanging coastal art well
Where you hang a print affects how it looks in the first week and how it has held up by the twentieth year. Light, humidity and the other pictures on the wall all play a part. The choices below apply to any sea wall art on paper.

Living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms
Coastal and beach wall art usually goes in the living room, the bedroom or the bathroom. Each room's light and humidity point to a different way of presenting it. Sand tan, wave blue, sky white and sunset gold sit easily in coastal, modern and calm interiors.
- Focal point: a larger swimmer or beach scene at the centre.
- One side: a sea-life or seabird print, such as one from the flags series.
- Other side: a quieter harbour or sea view.
In a steamy bathroom, I would choose a framed, glazed print over an unprotected sheet.
Creating a coastal gallery wall
Coastal prints group well in twos, threes or fours, including pairs and triptychs. Repeat one frame colour or mount tone across the group, and different sizes will read as a single collection.
Mixing open-edition framed prints with limited editions and an original gives the wall variety. It keeps the pieces from looking like interchangeable decorative panels. That is the position we hold.
Light, humidity and glazing
The Institute of Conservation advises keeping framed works on paper out of daylight, and away from south-facing light where possible, because light damage builds up and cannot be reversed. A 2014 review in Studies in Conservation cites the museum convention of 50 ± 5% relative humidity at about 20–21°C. A 2024 review in Energies notes there is no single universal standard. Treat those numbers as a guide at home, not a rule.
A window mount is a card border with an opening cut for the image. It leaves an air gap between the paper and the glass, and it supports the print. Choose archival matboard and reversible paper hinges rather than glue or tape. Conservation Clear and Museum glazing block 99% of UV. 2 mm Perspex is lighter and less fragile than glass.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are beach prints and framed pieces sent in the UK?
Prints up to 20 × 16 inches travel flat in an envelope, and larger ones are rolled in a tube. Mounted or framed pieces up to 40 × 30 inches go by post or courier. Framed work up to 500 mm on the longest side goes in double-wall packaging, and work from 500 to 1,200 mm in telescopic boxes. Many networks limit parcels to about 1.2 m and may refuse declared glass.
What is a good-quality stretched beach canvas made from?
One current specification is 400 gsm artist-grade cotton canvas on 38 mm stretcher bars. Ask for both figures before you buy a beach scene canvas. If a listing gives neither, you cannot compare it properly.
Which beach canvas works best for filling a whole wall?
Large-format ocean canvas is usually suggested for covering a whole wall. Multi-panel sets are sold as wall-fillers split across several coordinated panels. In my view, a grouped set of framed prints fills the same space with more character than one generic panel.
